Over 5 million years ago, Kaua‘i took its place as part of an island chain. Lava spewing from a hot spot beneath the floating Pacific Tectonic Plate formed Kaua‘i as it did the other islands in the chain. Kaua‘i is the oldest island of the Hawaiian chain. The first people arrived in a double-hulled outrigger sailing canoes from the Marquesas Islands, over 2,000 miles away. Hawaii is the most remote island chain in the world, over 2,000 miles from the nearest landfall. Hawaii became part of the United States in 1959. English and Hawaiian are Hawaii's two official languages. Kaua‘i has been the setting for dozens of Hollywood films from South Pacific to Jurassic Park. Moviemakers find the raw scenery the perfect stand-in for South American jungles to Caribbean paradises. |

Flat Stanley arrived on Kaua‘i in August of 2006. His arrival was celebrated by Dawn & Samantha, friends of Tyler Thompson, with Lei’s and kisses at the airport in Lihue. |
![]() The first stop for Flat Stanley was a trip to the Wailua river where Dawn & Samantha paddle Outrigger Canoes. They put Flat Stanley in the canoe and let him help paddle to the Fern Grotto. This photo of the trip to the Fern Grotto shows one of his hosts, Samantha, in the 4th seat but unfortunately, Flat Stanley is a little short so you can’t see him waving. Aloha!

Next, Flat Stanley visited Kipu Falls. You can just see him next to Samantha as they jump off the 18 foot waterfall. What an adventure! |

Flat Stanley's last adventure on Kaua‘i was a visit to the Jurassic Park Gates up in the hills near the "Wettest place on Earth", Mount Waialeale. Seemed we missed the dinosaurs but he had a great time seeing the views used in the Jurassic films. |
| We said a fond Aloha to Flat Stanley just yesterday and miss him terribly already. We also would like to tell Tyler how much we miss him too and hope one day he can visit to see the places Flat Stanley enjoyed |
| Aloha! Dawn & Samantha |
